I get asked all the time, Jen, what is the best way to go about building my business online?
I got to tell you that there is not just one specific way.
The ultimate way to go about doing this is…
Building it the way that you truly want to build.
Many times throughout my career, I was always stressing about finding the most perfect strategy and the most perfect approach.
I would feel guilty not doing things that I didn't want to do because I felt like I had to be doing them.
I want to share with you two ways that you can gain traction, momentum, commissions, and leads.
If you just choose to use the right strategies that work best for you.
1. Passive Marketing
Passive marketing is all of the content that you put out on the interwebs for people to see as they're walking by on social media. They're scrolling, reading your emails, watching your videos, tuning into your webinars.
It's the way that you present your information and your value so people are attracted to what it is you're talking about. Their eyes and ears perk up to learn more about your products or services.
2. Get Proactive
The second piece to this is learning to become very proactive in your marketing efforts.
Now, this could mean prospecting one on one, conversations, follow ups.
You could be doing a meetups, doing in person presentations, in person meetings to share your products and services with people.
This also includes just networking and getting out there and building up your audience.
When it comes to the way that you want to build your business, what strategies do you resonate with most?
And here's where I used to get stuck. I used to feel so guilty because I'm going to be honest…cold marketing prospecting is NOT my jam!
Starting random conversations about the weather and then trying to maneuver awkwardly into showing my business opportunity …I don't know many who like it.
It just wasn't for me…still isn't!
I wanted to find a way to cast a wider net, create a bigger impact and help more people, but not feel like it was draining 24 hours out of my day.
That's when I really started to focus more on passive approach to creating amazing content.
Delivering really valuable information so that I could start to build a relationship, but not feel like I had to be up in everybody's inbox all day, errr Day.
Do both passive and proactive strategies work? Absolutely!
It's just totally up to you which way you want to go about building your business, what activities do you want to be doing throughout your day?
I like to relate this to long term and short term game as well.
If I think about where I want to be when I'm 60, 70 years old, I don't want to be prospecting one on one.
Building out a structure, platform and system for my business will alleviate doing a lot of that heavy lifting.
Again, it doesn't mean that you're not going to learn the skill sets that you need to go out there and prospect and get good at having conversations with people.
However, it does mean that you won't have to hustle and grind your face off for the rest of your life.
Are You More of A Hunter or A Farmer?….
Hunting is when you're really going out there and one-on-one, getting proactive, having all those conversations. It's a tedious process, but it does get you into profit quickly.
I will tell you… some people are amazing hunters.
I know people who love the thrill of cold market prospecting. They just have a knack for going in, having a one on one conversation and closing someone quickly.
With that being said, a lot of people I know struggle with this and then they end up in conversations for weeks and weeks and they get nowhere.
Farmers plant seeds with passive content, throwing out value and broadcasting through multi channel marketing on social media.

- IG TV
- Blog Posts
Maybe you have funnels that people can opt into to download your ebooks that leads them to a transaction where they can actually make a buying decision.
So I want you to really think, what does your personality lend itself to?
What do you resonate with most, farming or hunting?
It's important to know so you can start to think of what you should really be focusing on in your daily activities.
Farming is more of the attraction marketing approach. You lead people to you through your content creation efforts.
Potential Clients & Prospects start reaching out to you so you don't have to do so much heavy lifting inside of one on one conversation.
Both strategies work.
Some people are amazing at one or the other.
Some people love having a mixture of both.
I love having those conversations with people once they've already raised their hand to say they're interested in my thing. A lot of times my content does that work for me so that I don't have to have hours and hours and hours be dedicated to being in my inbox.
Let's face it, we only have so many hours in a day and we do want to create an easy flow in our business so that way we're not sitting inside of our business all day 24 slash seven.
As an attraction marketer and being a farmer that I am, it doesn't mean that I don't actually prospect, but I want to give you an idea of how your passive marketing could really help you do all of that heavy lifting.
Let's say you're throwing a party at your house. Obviously you're going to need some invitations and you're going to be passing out those invitations to all of your guests, but before your guests arrive, you're actually going to have your house clean.
You're going to have food and drinks and music and all you know, a birthday cake, whatever kind of party it is, you're going to have everything set up so when your guests arrive, the party's poppin and they're going to stay and hang out.
If people came to your house and you didn't have everything set up properly, they wouldn't want to stick around.
They would think, “oh my gosh, I wish I would've went to someone else's party tonight!”
So how does that relate to your business?
When you're passing out invitations, that's you being proactive. That's you meeting new people and connecting and adding friends and socializing, commenting, going out there and being very proactive. Those are the flyers you're passing out.
What starts to happens is people get really nosy. They love that they're getting the attention from you and they want to see who you are.Everywhere you comment and create engagement, you're leaving your virtual business card. Click To Tweet
Your customer is looking for help with something very specific.
You have the opportunity to give them an offer or a product or something to help them, but if you're not creating content that they can connect with, they're never going to ask you.
The content that has strong calls to action and leads to those offers or they're never going to know that you actually have a business.
I will tell you that you will get into profit quicker if you are proactively prospecting and having those one on one conversations.
I did that for a very long time and once I created that momentum, I decided to flip the script and now I really focus more on content creation and the passive strategies because it leads to conversations.
People immediately start a conversation geared towards how I can actually help them because they have been paying attention and following along with everything that I've been sharing with them through my content.
ACTION: Go do an audit of your timeline, whether it be on instagram or facebook, and take a look at your last 10 posts.
- Looking from an outsider's perspective, what do you see?
- Is it very clear what you're the go to for when it comes to your business?
- Are you creating awesome content or are you just sharing viral videos and quote posts?
We really want to get to a point to where you're delivering consistent value, intertwining your lifestyle, behind the scenes and stories so people really come to know who you are.
A good indication to know whether or not your audience is resonating with you is…
- Are they engaging?
- Do they like it?
- Leaving comments?
- Getting interactive with your post?
If they're not, they're just not picking up what you're putting down.

Start practicing an even flow of proactively getting out there and meeting people. Lead them back to your page, but make sure that everything on your page is solid information about who you are, what you do, and how you help people.
This will help you find the dream tribe you are ready to have show up.
